Self-guided
At the Discerning Traveller we offer a selection of carefully designed self-guided walking and hiking tour holidays through some of the finest scenery in England & Wales.
Walking holidays
Our tours range in duration from 4 to 10 nights, but you can add on extra nights when you book. Most of our routes are suitable for reasonably fit walkers who can walk 8 to 10 miles per day with some longer days.
Hassle-free
We book your rooms, transfer your bags and provide hiking maps and detailed directions, including how to reach the starting point of your tour from airports and rail stations.
Hiking Tours in Cornwall
Cornwall’s long and dramatic coastline is a wonderland for hikers and walkers. We offer a choice of three different week-long self-guided walking holidays along the cliff-top footpath, taking in fishing villages and remote sandy beaches.
Walking in the Cotswolds, Sussex & Kent
The Cotswolds and Sussex contain some of the finest landscapes of lowland England. The wonderful honey-coloured stone architecture of Cotswolds towns and villages can be traced back to the prosperity of the mediaeval woollen industry.
Walking in Dorset, The Jurassic Coast & Exmoor
Our Exmoor tour combines coastal walking on the lofty cliff-tops of the South West Coast Path (picture above) and hiking across the rolling moorland of the Exmoor National Park. Our hiking tours in Dorset – The Jurassic Coast (J5, J9) and Purbeck (D6) – together cover the whole coastline between Exmouth and Poole. This coast forms the East Devon and Dorset UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, popularly known as the Jurassic Coast. All the coastal hiking on these three tours follows the well-maintained and clearly waymarked South-west Coast Path National Trail.
Walking in the English Lake District
Our Valleys tour explores the delightful landscapes of Windermere, Coniston, Langdale and Grasmere, while our more demanding Mountains tour takes in some of the peaks and high passes of the northern and western part of the Lake District National Park.
Walking the Pembrokeshire Coast of Wales
The rugged cliffs of the 300km long Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail offer some of the finest coastal hiking to be found anywhere. From St David’s, with its Romanesque red sandstone cathedral, you can climb the rocky summit of Carn Llidi (180m).
Walking in the Welsh Borderland & on Offa’s Dyke
For the English, Wales has always been a foreign land with its own Celtic language. In the 8th century A.D. King Offa of Mercia built a north-south earth wall to keep out the Welsh rustlers – the famous Offa’s Dyke, now followed by a National Trail.
