On the Saturday of Easter weekend we followed Offa’s Dyke Path from the market town of Kington over the windswept heathland of Hergest Ridge and down to the tiny Welsh village of Gladestry. Just outside Kington is one of England’s great gardens, Hergest Croft (www.hergest.co.uk). It’s open every day from April to October and the displays change dramatically with the seasons. In early April we were delighted to find that some of the numerous exotic species of tree rhododendron in the sheltered wild garden of Park Wood were already ablaze with blooms, although the ‘peak’ season is not until May. You can visit Hergest Croft while walking the Offa’s Dyke Path national trail through the Welsh Borderland northwards from Hay-on-Wye on our tours OB4 and OB7. In fact we intentionally make the day’s walk from Gladestry to Kington shorter than average to allow time to explore this wonderful garden. The national trail leads right past the main entrance. There’s also a tearoom on site…
